Even when a patient suffers from a terminal illness, they expect open, honest, and respectful professional interaction with empathy from the clinicians and vice versa. Clinical training helps us, health care professionals, to stay within our boundaries of professionalism, practise evidence-based medicine, yet often we see a break down in the relationship between the patient and the health care professional. This can only be overcome by spreading the knowledge and awareness among future generations of doctors and caregivers, and nurture a thriving medical fraternity.
Most clinical teams assume that adequate clinical training, experience and motivation are sufficient to ensure successful performance. While these are indeed necessary prerequisites, they are not sufficient, especially in an increasingly complex healthcare set-up. There are many factors that can influence human performance, either in a given moment, from day to day or over long periods of time.
